Looks like rare diseases and disabilities are the recent fascination of Bollywood directors, be it Amitabh Bachchan’s Alzheimer’s act in ‘Black’, or Aamir Khan’s anterograde amnesia in ‘Ghajini’, or the recent Asperger’s syndrome portrayed by SRK in ‘My Name Is Khan’. Joining the anthology is this week’s release, ‘Guzaarish’. A Sanjay Leela Bhansali creation, ‘Guzaarish’ has in it all the elements that one could think of while going to watch a film created by this ace director. Right from resplendent visual splendor to riveting content to aesthetic surroundings, the movie is class of its own. A simple story woven with fascinating elements of sentiments - the movie is truly ‘magical’ in its own right!
‘Guzaarish’ is a story of Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan), a one-time revered magician, now a quadriplegic due to an act gone wrong. He is taken care of by his daily nurse Sofia (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who does all the chores with utmost love and devotion. So, whether it is brushing her patient’s teeth or cleaning his bed sores or simply drawing the blinds to keep the sunlight away, every act of hers is has an underlying aspect of unsaid love and dedication. An RJ at Radio Zindagi, Ethan’s life goes characteristically only until the day he wishes a desire to end it all. Ironic as it may sound, Ethan requests his advocate friend (Shernaz Patel) to file a petition in court, requesting he be allowed euthanasia. What happens next and whether or not the plea is granted forms the crux of the movie.
While the cinematography is sure to baffle your visual senses, gratifying the want for more, the chemistry and the unusual love story is gonna set the stage on fire. So what if Ethan and Sofia do not say it by the word of mouth, their eyes do all the talking. The intense passion and the perplexity of emotions depicted by the two win hands down when it comes to love powerplay. All that we can say is hats off to Hrithik and Aishwariya! While Hrithik takes over in certain parts of the movie, Aishwariya is absolutely spellbinding at others. Taking into consideration the complexity of the characters, who do not have the usual grief, joy, pain and passion, the two ace actors are simply stunning.
Though ‘Guzaarish’ scores a hit in terms of cinematography, story, performance and music, what falls short of the film is its gloomy nature. Not everyone would want to go into the theatre to watch the film which has a monochromatic screenplay that is monotonous in nature, too much of blues, black and whites and an inert sense of angst and anguish. The film lacks the commercial element, which is one reason as to why people might wade off from opting for it. Nevertheless, ‘Guzaarish’ is by no means has an avoidable fair. Instead, we urge the cinema lovers to watch it - not every time is a film so uniquely conceptualized, created and executed. An enriching tale, without a doubt!
Guzaarish Pre-release Review
After ‘Dhoom 2’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’, Bollywood’s hottest on-screen duo, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are back with the dark-romantic ‘Guzaarish’. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film marks his debut into the sector of music direction. Considered to be a remake of 2006 Hollywood movie ‘The Prestige’, the film has been produced by Ronnie Screwvala, under the banner UTV Motion Pictures. Newcomers A.M. Turaz and Vibhu Puri have composed the lyrics of the movie. ‘Guzaarish’ is set to release on 19th November, 2010.
Radio Jockey Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) is happily spreading love, magic and laughter to every caller and listener in Goa, who in turn are ignorant to the fact that this magician is a paraplegic for the last 14 years, confined to a wheelchair. Once a great magician of the beautiful and magnificent Goa, Ethan suffered a spinal cord injury in a near-fatal accident, while performing an act. Supporting him is his stunning married nurse, Sofia D’Souza (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) who forms the center of his present life. From a patient-nurse relationship, theirs transforms into a beautiful intimate affair. Tired of leading a wheelchair-bound life, Ethan requests the court to permit him to commit suicide on the 14th anniversary of his accident. As he leaves Sofia and her love to end his life, enters Omar Siddiqui (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who desires to learn magic, but from the very best.
How Ethan passes on the magical legacy and how Omar journeys him through the most basic right of life - the right to live life, forms the crux of the story. With magic on one end and ethics and morality on the other, what happens when the two ends meet? While the names like Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are enough to create interest amongst the audience to make a beeline to the theaters, will the magical pair be able to connect with the audience? After two big hit movies ‘Dhoom 2’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’ in their kitty, will the duo make a hat trick? Wait till 19th November, 2010 when the movie releases at your nearby theater to check out the answers.
