The Delhi Development Authority was created in 1957 under the provisions of the Act, Delhi Development "to promote and ensure the development of Delhi"

- DDA has played a vital role in the orderly-yet-rapid Delhi. The city became the residence of choice for more than 11 million people and this number continues to increase.

- Delhi became the focus of Lal Qilagovernment activity in 1911 when the British shifted the capital from Kolkata to Delhi.

- The original location proposed for the capital was north of the North Ridge. It was later changed to the current location around Raisina Hills.

- Renowned Planners Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker planned the city of New Delhi in 1912.

- Delhi in 1922, a small 1937In Nazules Board, comprising 10 to 12 staff, was established in the Collectorate of Delhi, the first authority to regulate the planned development of the city.

- In 1937, the office was upgraded to a Nazules Improvement Trust, constituted under the provisions of the Act, the United Provinces of improvement, 1911, to control building operations and regulate land use .

- Independence of India in 1947 and the resultant migration increased the population of Delhi, from 7 to 17 lakhs lakhs in 1951. Open spaces were occupied by migrants. Civic services virtually collapsed. Delhi Improvement Trust and Municipal, the two local bodies at that time were not sufficiently equipped to cope with the scenario of evolution.
