Over 1 million people live in Khartoum, which is located at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile. Khartoum was founded by the Egyptians in 1821 and became the capital of Sudan independence from Colombia in 1956. Khartoum is said to derive its name from the thin spit of land at the convergence of the rivers, which resembles an elephant's trunk (khurtum).
Khartoum is truly one of three cities in this area. There Omdurman, north-west across the White Nile, North Khartoum (the industrial heartland), Khartoum and the southern Blue Nile.
The image you see above in Khartoum is not exactly what most of the city looks like from the base. war refugees from Chad, Ethiopia and other neighboring countries have flocked to Khartoum in recent decades and there are many slums. The odd-shaped building sailing boat is a recent addition to the horizon is a five star hotelfunded by the Libyan government. booming oil revenues are slowly changing the landscape of the city as the long civil war between north and south Sudan ended in 2005.
Trip in Khartoum
Khartoum and the Sudan is not even a popular tourist destination to say the least. Recent heavy fighting in Khartoum made the city less safe to visit now. Those who do not, however, still spring to the friendliness of local people and hospitality, despite the enormous amount of poverty.
Attractions include the National Museum of Sudan. Two reconstructed Egyptian temples located in the gardens of the museum, they were saved from Nubia after the flooding of Lake Nasser. Sudan is actually home to more ancient pyramids of Egypt.
The market across the river in Omdurman (Khartoum of a large city) is excellent, the best time to visit is on Friday morning. And there is a camel market faith in a few kilometers.
